The Importance of Joining a Team

“New year, new me” is an ongoing theme at the beginning of every passing year. Health and fitness goals continue to sit at the top of the list that individuals set for themselves, and there are countless ways to achieve them. Here are some reasons why group running should be your number one pick.

Why Join A Running Team

The meaning of exercise has certainly evolved, but running has remained a staple for many – tried and true over time. If you have a goal to take your sport to the next level this year, joining a community of athletes can greatly benefit you.

You'll likely be surprised to see your horizons expand when you engage with like-minded people. Being surrounded by people with similar goals is motivating and inspiring, and it can lead to new skills and long-lasting relationships. A sense of camaraderie will give you the encouragement and support needed to achieve your personal goals, whether in sports or life.

Accountability is Key

Being your own accountability partner can be challenging. When you hit personal roadblocks, teammates can provide ease in tearing down any barriers that keep you from succeeding.

“Why you should join a running club and Santa Barbara Running and racing ‘SBRR’ specifically is for accountability, focus, excellence, friendship, and community. Joining a running club 100% provides all of those things. When you work out/run together, all of those qualities are fostered. In 2019, SBRR had 45 people qualify and race the Boston Marathon. In 2023 we have 35. For a team and community of this size (100 members) – this sort of success is unheard of.”

Challenge Yourself

Running with others could be the perfect opportunity to up-level your skills if you're a seasoned athlete. Alongside peers, you'll be motivated to travel further and faster – in fact, research shows that there are more barriers and limitations for a solo runner than for a group. So, if competition is your thing, whether with yourself or with someone else, there’s no better way to boost your confidence than a bit of competition. Sometimes, that social influence can be a good thing.

Whether or not you are an experienced or leisurely runner, joining a club is an approachable way to either start or advance your experience. It’s important to remember that being involved in athletic groups doesn’t just benefit you, but it affects those around you.
